    Are you interested in how electricity and machines function; how voice and data communication work or what construction work entails? Interested in chemical reaction or a passion in innovative interior design and architecture? If so, you have come to the right place.

     

    At the School of Science and Engineering, we believe in possessing a positive attitude. Team this up with innovative thinking, ability to cope with uncertainty and challenges, efficient use of technology, effective communication and collaboration with others will lead to success and achievement.

     

    As technology is constantly changing, lecturers could not just sit back and teach ‘old’ and obsolete technologies. With the support of the Programme Advisory Committee members (PAC) who are experts from the relevant industries (both private and public sector), the School of Science and Engineering continue (and will continue to do so) to develop relevant programmes to fulfil the demands and expectation of the 21st century. More importantly, they are designed to ensure that the gap between engineering education and practice is minimal.

     

    Innovative approach to teaching and learning are carefully crafted; for example with the use of Moodle platform. Coupled together with both hands-on and theory-based learning, students will experience exciting and engaging setting which will produced to encourage innovation and teamwork skills.

     

    Politeknik Brunei is targeting to achieve ISO 9001: 2015 by the end of 2016. The School of Science and Engineering is in the process of obtaining accreditation from the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) UK. By collaborating with the Department of Quality Assurance (QA), QA processes are developed and implemented to ensure that the programmes are continually improving and in line with the latest guidance and good practice. Accreditation provides benchmarking against other accredited programmes and affirms the reputation of the School of Science and Engineering as a quality provider of engineering education.

     

    The combination of outstanding teaching staff and commitment from the students, the School of Science and Engineering can produce leaders of tomorrow, who can meet the needs of the industry, in terms of having socio-technical competencies (for example; hands-on, theoretical, and social settings).

  • Introduction

     

    The School of Science and Engineering (SSE) is located at the satellite campus in Lumut, approximately 91km from the main campus at Ong Sum Ping. The school offers the following 3-year programmes.

  • Diploma in Electrical and Electronic Engineering (DiEEE)

     

    Introduction

     

    As the Electrical and Electronics industry continues to grow in Brunei, there is a high demand for graduates to be equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills. This course was designed in collaboration with industry experts in order to obtain relevant skills and knowledge that meet industry’s standard and accredited by IET (UK).

     

    The course content includes laboratory investigation, design work, tutorials, end tests and final year project based on industry needs. The learning methods comprise of blended learning, student centered learning and practical problem solving. As a graduate in electrical and electronics engineering, the skills acquired throughout the course are transferable to many industries and allow progress onto appropriate degree programmes in the future.

     

     

    Aims and Objectives

     

    The programme aims to produce innovative, skillful and marketable graduates. The objectives are:

     

        • • To equip students with technical knowledge and skills in Electrical and Electronic Engineering and in line with industrial demands.
        • • To expose students to real world problems and develop skills and experiences which are applicable to the working environment.

  • Diploma in Telecommunication and Systems Engineering (DiCSE)

     

    Introduction

     

    This programme will develop knowledge and depth of expertise in the engineering of telecommunication network and systems associated with all aspects of voice and data communication systems.

     

    The strong ties with local telecommunications service providers have assisted in developing a practical programme which is highly relevant to the needs of the industry through integration of the latest technology and innovation.

     

     

    Aims and Objectives

     

    The programme aims to produce innovative, skillful, competitive, knowledgeable, and highly employable graduates.

     

    The objectives are:

     

        • • To provide students with opportunities to gain basic knowledge of current practice in the areas of Telecommunication and Systems Engineering and acquire specialised knowledge in areas that are relevant to the engineering community of Brunei Darussalam;
        • • To develop students’ understanding of the fundamental principles of engineering to enable them to respond positively to the demands created by future changes in technology;
        • • To offer students with challenges for promoting the development of skills and personal qualities that are essential to the work environment;
        • • To build close relationships with engineering organisations and produce technicians of the right calibre

  • Diploma in Mechanical Engineering (DiME)

     

    Introduction

     

    Due to the ever changing industry in Brunei, there is a need for graduates to be highly skilled and knowledgeable in their work which is aligned with Brunei’s Vision 2035. Mechanical Engineering is one of the most popular programmes among future engineers. It is also a programme which is a joint collaboration between Politeknik Brunei and industrial experts. Modules taught in this programme are continuously updated to meet the current needs of many industries.

     

    Students will undertake practical workshops, experiment, tutorials, assignments, exams and final year projects based on the industrial demands. Blended learning is one of the main learning methods to enable students to communicate with their lecturers or peers through online discussion and for submission of assignments. The skills and knowledge obtained from the programme also allow students to progress further into relevant degree programmes in future.

     

     

    Aims and Objectives

     

    The aim of the programme is to provide training for technician and professional personnel to gain employment in the mechanical engineering in Brunei Darussalam.

     

    The objectives are:

     

        • • To allow graduates to practice their skills in engineering fields such as design, research, development, testing, and manufacturing through the application of fundamental knowledge, skills, and tools of mechanical engineering;
        • • To enhance their skills through education, training and professional development;
        • • To be able to work independently and communicate effectively with others using the knowledge and responsibilities within the engineering profession.
        • • To allow graduates to progress through degrees or certificate programs in engineering, business, and other professionally related fields.

  • Diploma in Civil Engineering (DiCE)

     

    Introduction

     

    Diploma in Civil Engineering is a 3-year programme which takes place over a period of 6 semesters. This programme has been previously offered by Institut Teknologi Brunei (ITB). This programme is a joint collaboration between Politeknik Brunei and various stakeholders particularly in relevant industries within the field of Civil Engineering.

     

    The learning methods comprise of blended learning, student centered learning and practical problem solving. The final year project under this programme encourages students to be creative and innovative and experience the process of conducting research projects. In the final semester, students have opportunities to relate their learning experience with real working experiences during the 6 months-internship with relevant industries.

     

     

    Aims and Objectives

     

    This programme aims to produce successful and marketable graduates with skills and broad knowledge to perform a wider range role in Civil Engineering.

     

    The objectives are:

     

        • • To be able to communicate effectively in contexts of civil engineering or in construction management
        • • To perform drafting task associated with civil engineering design and construction
        • • To utilise computer aided drafting systems and design packages
        • • To recognise the interaction between civil engineering project and the impact on physical and social environment

  • Diploma in Petroleum Engineering

     

    Introduction

     

    Diploma in Petroleum Engineering is a programme offered by Politeknik Brunei in collaboration with Brunei Shell Petroleum (BSP) Company Sdn. Bhd. Since July 2012, the programme has been offered to students who seek career opportunities in the Oil and Gas Industry.

     

    The duration for the programme is three academic years (six semesters) which includes 6 months internship at companies in the Oil and Gas industry.

     

     

    Aims and Objectives

     

    The programme aims to produce students with requisite knowledge and essential skills in well engineering disciplines.

     

    The objectives are:

     

        • • To develop students capability in applying well engineering principles and practices in the real working environment in a safe and efficient manner
        • • To produce skilled and competent candidates for employment in the relevant field in the Oil and Gas industry
        • • To prepare graduates for higher degrees in related programmes in the future

  • Diploma in Science Laboratory Technology Specialised in Chemical Laboratory Technology (DiSLT)

     

    Introduction

     

    This 3-year diploma programme is a new programme that has been developed by Politeknik Brunei under the School of Science and Engineering. Guided by the advice and recommendations of experts from the local industry, this programme is tailored for Bruneians who need requisite skills and knowledge in chemical laboratory.

     

    The final year project encourages students to think big, be innovative and become environmentally conscious while learning, discovering and creating at the same time. This programme also includes a 6 months-internship program in the final semester with relevant industries and provide students with real working experiences.

     

     

    Aims and Objectives

     

    The aim of this programme is to produce graduates who are capable of carrying out various laboratory analysis and practical works independently.

     

    The objectives are:

     

        • • To carry out chemical analysis and quality control in industries, hospitals, schools and research institutions
        • • To carry out general chemical work in industrial and academic laboratories
        • • To assist in biochemical analysis and experiments in hospitals, schools and research institutions

  • Diploma in Interior Design (DiID)

     

    Introduction

     

    The 3-year diploma programme runs on 6 semesters which include 6 months of intership and final year project (FYP) to be completed at relevant industries. The programme is tailored for students with huge interest for interior design.

     

     

     

    Aims and Objectives

     

    This programme is aimed to produce graduates who are creative and possess innovative skills in applying their best technological tools in building designs by developing their critical thinking skills. It is hope that this programme will inspire students to grow into skilled and intellectual architectural technologists.

     

    The objectives of the programme are:

     

        • • To allow students to study in an exploratory environment that values critical and creative thinking in hands-on studios
        • • To equip students with the fundamentals of architecture design processes and practices through project work and out of classroom learning session
        • • To expose students with different building techniques, material and other factors that impact on the technical design of buildings
        • • To enhance students key presentational skills and become proficient in the use of processes such as Building Information Modelling and Computer Aided Design

  • Diploma in Architecture (DiArch)

     

    Introduction

     

    The 3-year diploma programme runs on 6 semesters includes 6 months of internship and final year project (FYP) to be carried out at relevant industries. The programme is tailored for students who have requisite skills in Architecture.

     

     

    Aims and Objectives

     

    This programme is aimed to produce graduates who are creative and possess innovative skills in applying their best technological tools in building designs by developing their critical thinking skills.     Learning Assessment

     

    The teaching and learning process, projects assessment, tutorials and workshops will be conducted in studios. Most of the assignment will be project-based learning and involve students doing continuous tasks with projects throughout the year. There will be an exhibition to allow students to display their projects for critical discussion with staff, peers and visiting audience.

     

    Students will receive regular verbal and written feedback on their progress to help improve abilities in Architecural design.

     

     

    Future Careers

     

    The student who graduate from the Diploma in Architecture will be able to progress study into a Degree course in Architecture or equivalent that are accredited by Royal Institute of British Architects ( RIBA ) which can make them into a Qualified Architect.

     

    Employers included: Architect practices, town planning department, construction companies and institutions.

     

    Career destinations: Architectural draftsman, Architectural designers, ArchitecturalTechnologist, urban designer, research officers, project managers.
