    A team from Politeknik Brunei will be competing in the IPWeek2016 Oil Rig Design Competition (IORDC) category on the 26th February at the Integrated Petroleum Week 2016 (IPWeek16) in Bandung, Indonesia. The event is organised by the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) ITB Student Chapter and will be held at Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB).


    The team with the name ‘Black Gold Digger’ comprises of five students: Fatin Hazidah binti Haji Jalil, Mohammad Ibrahim bin Haji Mohamed Husaini, Mohammad Syafiq bin Abdul Kani, Nadiah Hassan, and Muhammad Syafi’e bin Haji Zulkifli. They will be accompanied by Muhammad Aizuddin bin Roslan, a lecturer from the Well Engineering programme and the team manager, Alias bin Haji Abu Bakar , Acting Assistant Director of Politeknik Brunei. Politeknik Brunei team is the only team from Brunei Darussalam which will be competing with other universities & polytechnics in this event. Amongst the various universities & polytechnics which will be participating are University Teknologi Malaysia, Trisakti University, Institut Teknologi Bandung, Universitas Indonesia and Universitas Pembangunan Nasional “Veteran” Yogyakarta.


    The team is required to present an oil rig model that they have built before the event day based on the rig model specifications that have been set and with a budget for the materials of less than 100 USD. They will be competing in a series of tests which include a presentation on the oil rig model according to the blueprint that have been sent during the preliminary selection process, load testing, buoyancy testing and doing a 10 minutes presentation to explain their oil rig design to a panel of experts. During the competition, the team will expect to face strong challenges from other teams from countries as mentioned above. The Politeknik Brunei students must step up their teamwork, creativity, innovative skills and determination to perform well throughout the competition.


    By participating in the international competition such as IPWeek2016, the students will be able to gain great exposure in international competition that will help with their personal development. At the same time, they will be able to expand their understanding towards the latest development and technologies in the oil and gas industry. The event will also bring together students and experts in the related oil and gas industry by providing them with a platform to exchange experiences, ideas and solutions regarding oil and gas problems, as well as strengthening the kinship and friendship amongst students between university and the Oil and Gas industry experts.


    The team would like to thank Brunei Darussalam’s Ministry of Education, Politeknik Brunei and Brunei Shell Petroleum Co Sdn Bhd for the financial and technical support given.
