  • Wednesday, 01 November 2017

TWO Politeknik Brunei (PB) teams are representing the country at the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Student Chapter Malaysia Oil and Gas Convention 2017 (SMOGC 2017), which begins today at The Regency’s Inn Hotel in Kuala Lumpur.

This is Politeknik Brunei’s third participation in the event, supported by the SPE Brunei Section and the Brunei Shell Petroleum Company Sdn Bhd.

The students are also members of the Society of Petroleum Engineers Politeknik Brunei (SPE PB) Student Chapter which was officially formed early this year.

Present at the sendoff was a representative from the Society of Petroleum Engineer Brunei Main Section. The section encourages participation in competitions that give students a chance to exchange experiences and foster friendships while increasing knowledge in the oil and gas industry in a fast-paced and low-price environment.

Led by three lecturers – Haji Muhammad Reizal bin Muhammad Ali, Ahmad Bukhari bin Haji Emran and Haji Abdul Muiz bin Haji Matali from the Petroleum Engineering Department – the teams will participate in the categories of Oil Rig Design and the Petrobrain Competition.

Muhammad Afiq Sufi bin Abu Sufyan, Corine Lim, Fazrina binti Tuah and Muhammad Ashraf Fuad bin Muhammad Nizamuddin will compete in the Oil Rig Design category.

They are required to build oil rig models using materials provided by the organisers, and then deliver a five-minute presentation before a panel of judges.

In the Petrobrain category, PB will be represented by Siti Nurhidayah Akmal binti Haji Wahid, Nurul Farhanah binti Haji Jadid and Siti Nur Alyana Syaqinah binti Abdul Rahman, who will pit their skills against other teams in a fast-paced quiz on technical and non-technical questions related to the oil and gas industry.

The teams have undergone intensive training in the past month, and are ready for the competition, according to a press release.

Denis Ho Mun Tai, the Director of PB; Alias bin Abu Bakar, the Acting Assistant Director of PB; and Dr Tang Shi Siong, the Acting Head of School of Science and Engineering, were recently present at a pre-departure event for the participating students and lecturers.

Following the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah, led by Ahmad Bukhari, a motivational speech was delivered by Denis Ho Mun Tai.

With the theme ‘Cultivating resilient, resourceful and rising to challenge young talents towards the norm’, SMOGC 17 aims to encourage students and young minds to be a part of the effort to promote knowledge on the oil and gas sector, while developing human capital and creating awareness of global environmental sustainability.

Politeknik Brunei Team finished second in the Oil Platform Design category at Johor Bahru, Malaysia in 2015.
