As an initiative of Telekom Brunei Berhad (TelBru) and Huawei Technologies (B) Sdn Bhd, to align with the local ICT talent development of future generations and the importance of developing the ICT industry in Brunei Darussalam, the official handover ceremony for sponsorship of a Fibre-Optic ‘Optical Line Terminal’ (OLT) equipment to Politeknik Brunei was successfully presented at the School of Science and Engineering, Politeknik Brunei in Lumut.
Presenting on behalf of TelBru and also as the Guest of Honour is Mr David Holliday, the Chief Executive Officer, and receiving for Politeknik Brunei is Mr. Denis Ho Mun Tai, Director of the institution.
With this presentation of the Optical Line Terminal (OLT) Equipment to Politeknik Brunei, the students will not only be connected to Brunei’s fastest and most secure broadband network, but they will of course, have an opportunity to gain hands--on practical training on the equipment in order to to promote a greater understanding of the fixed broadband technology. The industry--academic collaboration between TelBru, Huawei and Politeknik Brunei is aimed to help prepare the local ICT talented individuals in this industry, to lead the country into the Digital Economy in the coming years in various aspects, in alignment towards the Wawasan 2035 vision.
Politeknik Brunei offers Level 5 Telecommunications and System Engineering programme, which can utilise the use of the sponsored equipment for their future practical studies, mainly on the connectivity of Fiber. As a partner to this joint sponsorship, Huawei has set up the equipment prior to the event and will be providing series of training on how to use the equipment, and brief on care guidelines.
During a speech by Mr David Holliday, he highlighted that the OLT, will benefit the students in learning how fiber is pulled, and how eventually it reaches a customers’ home. Understanding the concept of it practically, as opposed to only theory, can help them improve their knowledge and grasp of this technology.
Mr Denis Ho Mun Tai also hoped that the concerned students would be able to acquire the important relevant industry skills and technological training which are vital for their employability after their graduation from Politeknik Brunei. And he thanked TelBru and Huawei for the generous donation which would help to ensure the continued relevance of Politeknik Brunei’s programmes for the industry as well as towards helping Politeknik Brunei to realise its Vision of being a reputable polytechnic producing innovative, skilful and marketable graduates.
By providing support to the country’s younger generation, TelBru aims to facilitate the development of human capital as part of Brunei’s Vision 2035 in telecommunications industry. This initiative will also work towards developing talent in the industry by immersing such students in hands on experience, reading and providing them with the opportunity to apply theory into practice.
During the ceremony, Mr Denis Ho Mun Tai presented a token of appreciation to Mr David Holliday as the Guest of Honour. The event ended with a tour and demonstration of the equipment to better understand the purpose and its functions.
